What are standardized tests?

TOEFL® IBT is the Internet-Based Test. It has four sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking (two independent tasks and four integrated tasks). At MYSOL you will practice TOEFL as if you were in a test center. Our online materials will familiarize you with the test atmosphere and draw focus on critical skills. Our trained instructors will help you go through sample tests and find out your specific needs to improve and get a high score.

TOEFL® ITP is the Institutional Testing Program. It features three parts: Listening, Structure and Written Expression, and Reading. Most schools and institutions use the ITP for placement of students who are already accepted into an academic program. ITP results sometimes determine whether an international student should receive conditional acceptance into a university, based on their English level. Some universities require the ITP for regular admissions as an additional entrance exam choice alongside IBT, IELTS, EIKEN, etc.

It is important to note that ETS markets the ITP directly to schools, not to individual takers. Please check with your prospective college to verify whether you can take the ITP as an alternative to other university entrance test exams.

IELTS is the International English Language Testing System. It is the British and Australian equivalent of the TOEFL IBT. This paper test has four sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.

IELTS also has two modules: Academic and General Training. Candidates have a choice between the two modules. They have different Reading and Writing papers. The Academic module assesses whether a candidate is ready to study or train in a medium of English. The General Training module is for candidates that want to study or train at below degree level, work or undertake work-related training in an English-speaking country, or emigrate to an English-speaking country.

EIKEN is basically the standard for English proficiency certification in Japan. The EIKEN framework comprises seven levels, administrated through a pass-or-fail basis. The levels are known as grades. The basic levels assess the students listening and reading skills, while the higher levels additionally evaluate the speaking and writing skills.
